Getting started

What the research portal is, how to choose a portal and find your way around.

What this is#

The research portal is a fast, credible way to explore and question a body of research. You ask a question in plain language and get an answer that is grounded in real documents and cited back to them, then explore the underlying reports, projects and the relationships between them.

Every portal runs on its own knowledge box - the connected content estate for one organisation. What you can search, ask and browse is exactly the content in that box, nothing more and nothing invented.

Choosing a portal#

You can run more than one portal, each on its own body of research. Switch between them from the Knowledge boxes menu at the top left of the header - open it from the name and logo in the corner. Each entry shows the organisation it belongs to, and the one you are in is ticked.

The same menu has Add a portal and Manage portals for administrators. A portal with no knowledge box connected yet needs an administrator to connect one before search and answers will work.

Finding your way around#

The header navigation is the same on every portal:

  • Explore - the home surface: a question box, suggested questions and topic rows.
  • Search - find documents fast, or ask for a short cited answer over them.
  • Library - browse, sort and filter the whole corpus.
  • Ask - a full, grounded conversation with saved sessions.
  • Graph - a visual map of the corpus (titled the Knowledge map in the app).
  • Tools - connect MCP clients and other research tools to the portal's knowledge.
  • Help - this documentation, with its own scoped search.
  • Manage - administration (connecting content, taxonomy, enrichments and health).

Press Cmd/Ctrl+K anywhere to open the command palette and jump straight to a search or a question. Use the theme toggle in the header to switch between light and dark.

Exporting your work#

Everything you produce can leave the portal as a file, and each export confirms itself with a short status line naming the file it saved:

  • Ask - Export on a session saves the whole research trail (questions, answers, sources and quality scores) as a Word document.
  • Investigations - Export to Word saves the case with its evidence and synthesis as a Word document.
  • Generate - Export to Word saves a briefing, comparison, timeline, FAQ or pros and cons with its references, and Export to PDF opens a print-ready copy in a new tab so you can save it as a PDF from your browser's print dialog.

Answers and investigations export to Word only; there is no PDF button on Ask. For a PDF of an answer, make a briefing on the same question in Generate and use Export to PDF, or print the Ask page from your browser and choose Save as PDF.
